Middlesbrough’s involvement in the FA Cup was ended as Manchester City claimed a 2-0 victory in their quarter-final at the Riverside.

David Silva earned the visitors the lead after just three minutes following Pablo Zabaleta delivering from the right.

However, it took until midway through the second-half for that to be improved upon as Aguero was on the end of Leroy Sane’s 67th minute cross.

Antonio Barragan was back in the starting line-up for the home side but fellow defenders Calum Chambers, Daniel Ayala and George Friend were ruled out because of injuries.

Boro made the worst possible start with Silva immediately stabbing in the opening goal at close-range from Zabaleta’s first-time ball.

The visitors continued their powerful start; although Marten de Roon proved wide of the mark before Rudy Gestede twice went close, including with a header cleared off the line. But he was then replaced due to suspected hamstring trouble.

Cristhian Stuani also saw a header from Adama Traore’s cross saved by Claudio Bravo, while City goalscorer Silva blazed over early in the second period.

There was a second enforced change when defender Dael Fry replaced the injured Bernardo. But it was Brad Guzan soon keeping out Aguero as the hosts continued to be pressed back.

Indeed Guzan produced a further trio of stops, until being beaten for a second time when Aguero turned in as Sane provided the assist.

Silva might have had another but for a deflection after his colleagues already had an effort disallowed for offside, while Fabio saw a headed reply cleared off the line before Raheem Sterling once again tested Guzan.
