Middlesbrough’s young defender Ben Gibson could see his current loan arrangement at Tranmere Rovers ended by injury.

The nineteen-year-old centre-back is suffering with an abductor problem and may return ahead of the original expiry date of January. He has so far made 25 appearances while helping the Birkenhead club to the leadership of League One.

Gibson has already visited a specialist and was expected to be sidelined for between six and eight weeks.

Despite making only a single first-team appearance to date for the Teessiders, Gibson twice played at Wembley last season while on loan at York City and also enjoyed a similar spell with Plymouth Argyle.
