Middlesbrough head coach Steve Agnew said it was “great” to get a first victory in charge at the Riverside.

Marten De Roon’s early goal decided the contest and renewed Boro’s hopes ahead of a difficult run-in while leaving their opponents in even deeper relegation trouble. The Teessiders hadn’t actually won in the league since December.

“It feels great. Everybody is absolutely delighted with the three points,” Agnew told BBC Sport. “We had to defend for long spells but we got the goal early. I’m so proud of the players.

“Clean sheets are obviously something you build on,” he continued. “I think it was important, the early goal. It gave everybody a lift and a confidence to see the game through. The players are all happy. We’ll certainly gain some confidence and belief going into games.”
