Middlesbrough head coach Aitor Karanka has paid tribute to on loan goalkeeper Shay Given.

The Spaniard wanted to extend the veteran 37-year-old’s loan from Aston Villa until the end of the season but that was blocked by his parent club.

Given is therefore eligible for three more games before returning to Villa Park at the end of this month.

“We couldn’t do anything because his club wanted to keep him,” Karanka told the Evening Gazette. “He has been excellent since he came to our club.

“He is a big personality in the changing room and is helping our other keepers,” he added. “So we say thank you to Shay and I hope he will continue to play as well as he has until the last second he is with us.”
