Gordon Strachan changed his goalkeeper at the weekend in an attempt to try and discover a winning formula for Middlesbrough.

In a surprise move the Scot recalled Brad Jones as a replacement for Danny Coyne and the Aussie shot-stopper went on to produce a couple of vital saves against Reading.

However, the Boro chief was quick to point out that it wasn’t due to any sudden loss of form from Coyne as his side increased their unbeaten home run to eight games with a 1-1 draw.

“Danny had done nothing wrong,” Strachan told the Northern Echo. “But sometimes a manager just feels he has to change something to try to get a win.

“I did the same when I was Coventry manager with Steve Ogrizovic. I stuck Chris Kirkland in, even though Steve had been one of the better players at the time.

“You do things every now and then because you think it might just be the change you need to get a win. We were close to getting that win at the weekend.”
