Boro target home rule

Middlesbrough are looking to get back to winning ways at the earliest opportunity as Wigan Athletic visit the Riverside this evening.

Defender Jonathan Woodgate misses out with a thigh strain and remains on the sidelines alongside goalkeeper Jason Steele after ankle surgery.

Head coach Aitor Karanka wasn’t expecting many changes following their six-game unbeaten run being ended by leaders Leicester City at the weekend. That means on loan Chelsea duo Kenneth Omeruo and Nathaniel Chalobah are likely to once again make the bench.

“It’s a difficult game but we need to win again,” Karanka told Boro’s official website. “I’m concerned about my own team – if we play like we can we can win. We need to be strong at home so that teams who come think it’s going to be very difficult for them to win here.”

Former Boro loanee Josh McEachran wasn’t expected to feature for the visitors as the Chelsea midfielder is still lacking match fitness.

However, defenders Tyias Browning and Rob Kiernan could return after missing the FA Cup holders’ weekend victory against Crystal Palace.
