Real Betis full-back Juanfran has rejected the opportunity to join Middlesbrough.
The 25-year-old defender held discussions with Boro last week after an initial £500,000 fee was agreed between the two clubs. That could have increased by a further £1m depending on appearances and promotion clauses.
However, Juanfran has since decided against a move to England with a switch to a rival Spanish club or Italy his preferred option.
Boro’s head coach Aitor Karanka previously worked with the right-back during their time together at Real Madrid.
