Emanuel Pogatetz – Austria

Pogi has shown signs of returning to his old self again in Austria`s opening game against Croatia, he committed three fouls that could each been worthy of a red card. Whilst I understand they are joint hosts and expectations are high, his performance could easily have left his team mates playing with ten men and really up against it.

I really hope tonight against Poland he plays with the same qualities that have earned him rave reviews at Middlesbrough for his performances last season and then Austria will benefit. If he plays in the Premiership next season with the same attitude he showed in the opening game of Euro 2008 then he will spend most of the season on the sideline through suspension.

Tuncay Sanli – Turkey

Tuncay has faired slightly better and in Turkey’s opening game against Portugal he showed glimpses of class and had a couple of chances, Turkey were disappointing however and went on to lose the game. Despite this he had a great game against Switzerland last night in conditions that he will have played in many times on Teesside. Tuncay went on to contribute to the winning goal with a superb pass. The only worrying thing from Boro`s point of view is that Turkey are playing him from start to finish and with Tuncay not having a proper pre-season break he may miss the start of the season.

His first Premiership season must have been tough and to go straight into a major tournament will surely take its toll.

High Point: Tuncay’s superb pass to Arda Turan who scored Turkey’s winner against Switzerland

Low Point: Emanuel’s dissent after the penalty against Croatia and the awful tackle from behind on Nico Kranjcar. Calm Down Pogi!

LOL, thats a ridiculous statement about Poggy. Yes, he made a few rash challenges, hes the Mad Dog! But he was a shining light in a team that played poorly on the night, and the pundits tend to agree also. He was Austria’s best player!

Tuncay is one of the fittest lads in the squad, he never stops running and has Energy to burn. I cant see Turkey getting past the quarter finals to be honest so a short extended rest and a good pre season will see him fit straight back into the squad with all cylinders firing. It wont phase him at all.

Pogatetz should have been sent off. If he hadn’t already picked up a yellow he would have certainly got one for his rugby tackle and forearm smash!

I agree that Pogi should have been sent off but as a Boro fan…..i was glad to see him stay on the pitch.
