Head coach Aitor Karanka had no complaints about the efforts of his players following their narrow 1-0 defeat at Tottenham Hotspur.

Harry Kane’s penalty just before the hour-mark after Son Heung-min was brought down by Bernardo Espinosa proved all that eventually separated the two sides at White Hart Lane.

“At the end we had a few chances to score. I said at half-time the way we had to play, without pressure,” Karanka told BBC Sport. “If you are here playing under pressure against Tottenham it is impossible and at the end we had chances to score.

“The players did their best and that is the good thing. They put everything on the pitch,” he added. “Again, we have to know it will be a tough season but we are showing we can compete against every single team.”
