Middlesbrough goalkeeper Tomas Mejias was expected to join Rayo Vallecano on loan until the end of the season.
Former Real Madrid shot-stopper Mejias, 27, already linked up with the Vallecano squad ahead of the deal being finalised.
The Teessiders still have plenty of competition for their goalkeeping position with Victor Valdes, Brad Guzan and Dimi Konstantopoulos available.
Vallecano are currently just above the relegation zone in the Spanish second division.
