Spanish media reports are saying that Gaizka Mendieta will hang up his boots when his contract with Middlesbrough ends in the summer, ending his 17-year playing career.

The 33-yard-old former Spanish international had been blighted by injuries during his time with Middlesbrough and hasn’t featured for the club for a year, and has been left out in the cold by Gareth Southgate, having been told in January that he was free to leave the club.

Despite the troubled season that Middlesbrough have had so far he is still out of the first team picture, and although it is believed that clubs in Spain, the Middle East and America would be prepared to offer him a contract, Levante, a Valencia based paper report that he has decided to retire.
