Middlesbrough are eight league games without a victory after a tight scoreless draw with Everton at the Riverside.
Adama Traore saw a chipped attempt gathered by Joel Robles underneath his crossbar while opposite number Victor Valdes was forced into a low stop from Romelu Lukaku.
Recent signing Ademola Lookman also had a couple of efforts blocked for the visitors before Cristhian Stuani’s close-range header was dealt with by Robles after the interval.
Boro defender Ben Gibson then went close when his header from a 65th minute corner was met on the line by Leighton Baines.
Meanwhile, home keeper Valdes later denied Lookman before substitute Rudy Gestede’s header from a Calum Chambers cross was turned over by Robles.
