Head coach Aitor Karanka said it was a good result following the 0-0 home draw with Everton.
The Teessiders kept it firm at the back to stay a couple of points above the relegation zone while occupying fifteenth place in the table despite being eight games without a victory.
“It was a really good result and we’ve played really well against a very good team in really good form,” Karanka told BBC Sport. “The crowd once again has been amazing and I just want to tell them to keep encouraging these players, because they deserve everything.
“We are competing well against really good teams and if we play this way against teams who are fighting like us, then we can beat them.”
