Manager Tony Mowbray was not for the first time in recent weeks reflecting on more poor defending as Middlesbrough suffered a seventh defeat in nine league games since the turn of the year against Millwall at the Riverside.

Boro striker Curtis Main scored his third goal in four games but his side were once again undone as a George Friend own-goal and Martyn Woolford earned their opponents a 2-1 victory. The result means Boro have amassed only four points from their last available twenty-seven.

“They were poor, poor goals for us to concede from a defensive point of view,” Mowbray bemoaned to BBC Sport. “We made it very difficult for ourselves. We didn’t get the luck but we can’t keep saying that. It is down to us to win football matches.

“Of course we are very disappointed and of course it has an effect on confidence,” he continued. “And of course it is very frustrating for the supporters here who have seen these results over the past few weeks. But do we still believe we can make the play-offs? Of course we do.”
