Middlesbrough manager Tony Mowbray paid tribute to non-league Hastings United following their 4-1 FA Cup third round defeat at the Riverside.

Boro striker Ishmael Miller had an early penalty saved but later added to strikes from Merouane Zemmama (2) and Andy Halliday against Bradley Goldberg’s reply as the hosts moved into the next round.

“It was a credit to them that they tried to play football right from the off,” Mowbray told BBC Sport. “I was pleased for them that they scored a great goal in front of their supporters. It was nice to be able to congratulate them afterwards.

“It’s important to keep the confidence and belief going no matter the name of the team you’re playing,” he added. “We got the job done, but we could have made it easier.”
