Head coach Aitor Karanka insisted he was proud enough of the performance despite a 3-1 defeat at Everton.

Alvaro Negredo forced goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg to turn into his own net for the opening goal of the game, but Gareth Barry, Seamus Coleman and Romelu Lukaku replied before the break as their side went second in the table.

“It’s disappointing when you lose a game but I have to say I’m really pleased with my players,” Karanka told Boro’s official website. “I was watching their [Everton’s] game on Monday [against Sunderland] and today they were a completely different team.

“It means that they had to play their best to beat us and for that reason I’m really proud of my players,” he added. “I’m not pleased because when you lose a game you can’t be happy but again, I have taken good things from today.”

The Teessiders slip into the bottom half of the table after back-to-back defeats.
