Rangers friendly awaits O’Neill

If former Celtic boss Martin O’Neill comes to the Riverside one of his first tasks will to prepare for a friendly against Rangers.

O’Neill was an early frontrunner for the England job, which eventually went to Steve McClaren, but the FA decided ? for whatever reason – to overlook him.

Speculation continues about whether he will join Boro but if he does the friendly at Ibrox on July 22 will provide him with a baptism of fire.

Although O’Neill looks an impressive manager on paper, it is hard not wonder just how impressive his CV actually. Sure, he did fairly well with Leicester and he won trophies at Celtic.

But other managers have done well at supposedly smaller clubs, and the SPL is practically a two-team league.

Perhaps a move to Boro would be the best for both parties – O’Neill would have the chance to show how good he really is and Boro would have a big-name manager to continue McClaren’s work.

Just as long as Middlesbrough don’t end up with Graeme Souness or David O’Leary…!

I remain to be convinced about O’Neill. And I just can’t see it happening.

Anyone who has ANY doubts what so ever about O’Neill’s managerial capabilities is an idiot. Sure, you may not be convinced looking at his SPL record, but looking at his achievements in Europe is a different matter. He has beaten, Porto, Juventus, Rosenborg, Baraclona, AC Milan, Bayern Munich, Liverpool…the list goes on and on. You at the Riverside would be EXTREMELY lukcy to get a manager of his caliber.

He does have baggage, it must be said. If I was a Boro fan, I’d prefer a young, up and coming manager to the likes of O’Neill. And why did the FA not even seriously consider him? Makes you wonder…

Why would that be any good Rangers are rubbish, you might as well play a half decent championship team, it would be alot cheaper

I’m convinced DBT, i cannot see him managing a side outside of the top 4/5 or internationally.
