Head coach Aitor Karanka hailed an improved second-half display as ten-man Middlesbrough defeated Sheffield Wednesday 3-0 in the FA Cup third round.
Goals from Grant Leadbitter, Alvaro Negredo and Marten de Roon eventually proved the difference between the sides after the break despite the dismissal of home defender Daniel Ayala.
“If we had played the second half in the same way [as the first] we would have lost,” Karanka admitted to BBC Sport. “It was typical cup game. We had to play better and be more aggressive and in the second half we showed we are better than them.
“We won the game because we were organised, committed and when the chances arrived we scored.”
