Middlesbrough head coach Steve Agnew felt the game was probably lost inside the opening ten minutes at AFC Bournemouth.
Josh King and Benik Afobe gave the Cherries early supremacy and the visitors then had Gaston Ramirez sent-off for a second yellow card.
Both Marc Pugh and Charlie Daniels added further goals to complete the damage following the break.
“In a way, we lost the game in the first 10 minutes,” Agnew told BBC Sport. “That’s not like us, it was really poor defending. Playing short passes on the edge of the area is why we’ve been conceding.
“We gave ourselves a very difficult afternoon after conceding those two early goals and going down to 10 men against a very good team who score a lot of goals at home.”
