Head coach Steve Agnew was understandably very disappointed to concede a late equaliser to Manchester City at the Riverside.
His side appeared set for vital back-to-back home victories following goals from Alvaro Negredo and Calum Chambers, but were then denied by a late reply.
The Teessiders had already been on the end of a contentious penalty decision having actually led the contest at the break.
“We were disappointed to concede at the end, but I think that the effort and bravery was a credit to the players,” Agnew told BBC Sport. “That was the fighting spirit that we have shown over the past few weeks.
“From where I was I didn’t think that it was a penalty and I thought Sane went down very very easily. I find it strange that the referee can give the penalty from where he is positioned.”
