Middlesbrough manager Tony Mowbray admitted his side have failed to take the advantage of their play-off rivals slipping up following their latest draw with relegation-threatened Peterborough United at the Riverside.
Mowbray earlier made five changes to his starting-line up but the frustration continued as his charges made it five games without a victory in a scoreless encounter against their lowly opponents.
“It’s frustrating because I thought we did more than enough to win the game,” Mowbray told the Northern Echo. “We didn’t score, but we kept a clean sheet and that was important.
“I thought Rhys [Williams] came back and was showing some signs that he’s finding a bit of form. Him and Andre [Bikey] did well at the back,” he continued. “I thought Sammy [Ameobi] was good in the position behind the striker, and [Mustapha] Carayol came off the bench and had an impact.
“So there were some positives, but we didn’t get the result we needed. We probably deserved it, but we didn’t get it.”
Despite their latest setback, Boro are remarkably still just six points short of the play-offs, even though they have won only two of their last fifteen league games ahead of visiting promotion rivals Hull City this weekend.
But they are likely to be without left-back George Friend for most of the remainder of their campaign after a hamstring injury forced him off last night.
