Middlesbrough have signed midfielder Lewis Baker on a season-long loan from Chelsea.

The 22-year-old spent the previous campaign on loan to Vitesse in Holland while also having an earlier temporary stay with Sheffield Wednesday.

“This opportunity arose and I thought it would be a great one for me,” Baker told Boro’s official website. “I see this as a great opportunity for me to come here and show what I can do.

“I already know what the Championship is about,” he added. “I’m going to give it my all and hopefully we get back to where we should be.”

He should offer welcome competition and help cover the return of fellow midfielder Marten de Roon to Atalanta.
