Middlesbrough manager Tony Mowbray praised the efforts of match-winner Mustapha Carayol following last night’s narrow friendly victory over SC Farense.

The 24-year-old scored the only goal of the contest after being introduced at the interval against the Portuguese second division side at the Municipal Stadium.

“Undoubtedly Muzzy makes a difference for us, we know that, he knows that,” Mowbray admitted to the Evening Gazette. “We have to keep him fit and keep him going and hopefully he can produce it in the Championship for us.”

Boro included newcomer Dean Whitehead for the opening forty-five minutes until being replaced by fellow debutant Jozsef Varga at the break.

“It was good to record a clean sheet because we’ve done a lot of work with the defence over the last couple of days,” Mowbray added. “It’s only the first game and the result’s pretty irrelevant but it was good for the team to win and keep a clean sheet.”
