Striker Lukas Jutkiewicz won himself a first start of the season through his outstanding enthusiasm, according to manager Tony Mowbray.

And the 23-year-old forward instantly repaid Mowbray’s faith with a superb brace during the 2-1 victory at leaders Blackburn Rovers on Friday evening.

“Every day in training we’ve had to calm him down a bit, he’s been bursting out of his shirt to show us he wants to start,” Mowbray told BBC Tees. ‘He was a real handful and gives us a platform to play off.

“If you’ve got people like Emnes, Carayol and McEachran who are really clever, creative footballers sometimes they need the ball up that end of the pitch to be able to play,” he continued. “If you can play off Jutky and get people running at people off him in the final third then you’ve got a real problem.”

Former Coventry City striker Jutkiewicz was making his first start since undergoing medial ligament surgery in the summer.
