Middlesbrough boss Tony Mowbray has praised striker Marvin Emnes for overcoming a few personal difficulties.

The Dutchman has recently been in Suriname on compassionate leave and it probably showed following a less than impressive performance in the defeat at Blackpool.

But the 24-year-old marksman then proceeded to give an outstanding display in a 2-1 win at leaders Blackburn Rovers just a few days later.

“It’s very difficult for Marvin,” Mowbray admitted to the Evening Gazette. “I badgered him a lot over the last few days to the point where I probably got on his nerves.

“His body language hasn’t been great around the building and yet he showed at Blackburn he could produce when he has to,” he added. “He’s got some very close family with some illnesses. So it was a fantastic effort from Marvin and we really appreciate that.”
