Middlesbrough match-winner Scott McDonald was quick to dedicate the Capital One Cup derby victory at Sunderland to their “brilliant” travelling supporters.

The Australian international continued his impressive return to action with the only goal just before half-time at the Stadium of Light.

It was enough to confirm a place in the quarter-final draw of the competition and a fifth successive win for the visitors.

“They were fantastic all night. They were stuck high up in the Gods but they made a real racket,” McDonald told the Evening Gazette. “We could hear them all the way through, roaring us on. They were brilliant.

“They deserved that win,” he added. ‘It’s been a tough couple of years for the supporters at this club and so we were all delighted to give
them something to cheer.”
