Middlesbrough boss Tony Mowbray believes the Capital One Cup victory at Sunderland was the best away result achieved under his leadership – at least for the supporters.

Boro made it five straight wins courtesy of Scott McDonald’s fourth goal of the season from a late first-half cross delivered by on loan striker Ishmael Miller.

“For the fans I think it’s the best, for me it was a cup game that we had to negotiate,” Mowbray told the Evening Gazette. “I was delighted for the team, delighted for the supporters,” he added.

“It’s great for the people of Teesside, you could see what it meant to them and how happy they were,” he added. “If the team can make the fans happy then great and because it’s a local derby it means even more to them.

“The fans are fantastic and my job is to put a team on the pitch that makes them proud of being from Teesside and support the Boro.”

The draw for the quarter-finals of the competition will be held later this evening. The teams so far to have progressed are Arsenal, Aston Villa, Leeds United and Bradford City.
