Potential FA Cup opponents Harrogate Town could turn to former Middlesbrough boss Gareth Southgate for advice ahead of a possible third round trip to the Riverside next month.

The Conference North club first need to come past the challenge of the lowest-ranked side still in the competition, Hastings United, in their replay next week following a 1-1 draw in front of their own fans on Saturday – a game attended by their local resident Southgate.

“Gareth is a lovely man and he sent me two messages on Saturday about the game and wishing us good luck,” Harrogate boss
Simon Weaver told the Evening Gazette. “What with his Middlesbrough connections I think I will be texting him for the lowdown on them.

“The Riverside is a great stadium and with it being so close I think we could take a good few thousand so it would be a massive day out for the club,” he continued. “Middlesbrough away is still juicy tie – if we can get through what will be a difficult replay at Hastings.”
