Newcomers Dean Whitehead and Jozsef Varga have continued to impress Middlesbrough manager Tony Mowbray ahead of their opening pre-season friendly against Portuguese second division side SC Farense.

Both were expected to be involved as the Teessiders finally open their competitive programme in the Municipal Stadium on the Algarve later this evening.

“You can see the experience Dean has,” Mowbray told the Northern Echo. “We’ve seen in the sessions we’ve had so far how he breaks the play up and tries to start an attack. He’s only in his second week and he has to do a little bit more catching up. Yet his experience and knowledge will help us.”

Hungarian international Varga has recently arrived on a season-long loan from Debrecen and similarly already given clear indications of his own ability.

“At the moment, he has a tendency to chase the ball because he’s so fast across the ground, so we’ll have to try to get him to be more disciplined.” Mowbray continued. “He’s fast and physical and hopefully he will be ready by the start of August.”
