Middlesbrough head coach Aitor Karanka is looking towards a reduced 23-man squad at the Riverside.

The Spaniard has allowed four players to depart on loan this week as he seeks to find the correct balance.

Forward Luke Williams, midfielder Richard Smallwood and wingers Andrew Halliday and Adam Reach have been loaned to Hartlepool United, Rotherham United, Blackpool and Bradford City respectively.

Meanwhile, Kenneth Omeruo, Nathaniel Chalobah and Daniel Ayala have arrived at Boro this month, while Rhys Williams and Frazer Richardson could both be on their way out.

Karanka told BBC Tees: “I’d prefer to cut it down to what I think is a more manageable size for us.”
