Middlesbrough goalkeeper Jason Steele is using his extra time off to help forget about the painful memories of the previous six months.

Boro are back in pre-season training but Steele has been away experiencing a disappointing summer with the England Under-21’s.

And that followed a dismal collapse from the Teessiders during the second-half of last season as they eventually slid into a bottom-half-of-the-table finish.

“To be honest I can’t wait to get back to work,” he admitted to the Northern Echo. “The season starts very early, so it will be great to be back. There are so many wrongs that I want to put right and that needs hard work in pre-season.

“I don’t know what went wrong. I can’t put my finger on it but I wish I could,” he added. “On New Year’s Day we went to Derby and got stuffed and we were never quite the same again. I don’t know what happened that day but it all went downhill from there.”
