Middlesbrough are hoping that Stephen McManus will be fit enough to return against Preston North End at the Riverside on Tuesday evening.
The Scottish international defender missed the weekend draw with Reading because of illness, although he was still desperately keen to play.
“Stephen took ill on Friday night,” first team coach Colin Cooper told Boro’s official website.
“He was desperate to play but he was ill again on Saturday lunchtime, so the gaffer took the decision not to play him.
“He was ready to play if needed but he would have struggled to run around for 90 minutes. Hopefully it was just a 24-hour sickness and he’ll be okay for Tuesday.”
