Middlesbrough midfielder Richard Smallwood is looking to earn a regular place at the Riverside after helping Rotherham United to promotion via the play-offs last season.

The 23-year-old made twenty appearances for the Millers during his five-month stay and impressed sufficiently for manager Steve Evans to want to sign him permanently.

However, Boro have since triggered a one-year extension clause on his contract and he wants to take full advanatge.

“I see myself in the Boro team to be honest, I know I am good enough,” Smallwood told the Evening Gazette. “I hope I can cement my place in the team next season.

“Boro is a massive club and has got some great players,” he added. “I see myself in the team but it’s not my decision. I’m sure we will strengthen the squad as the summer goes on so we should have a strong team next season.”
