Boro’s Egyptian striker Mido has pleaded for the home fans not to engage in racist chanting against him, similar to those heard at the Riverside earlier in the season.

Then, Mido was subjected to chants relating to his Islamic background and terrorist activities. Amazingly, the striker was even booked by referee Mike Dean when he reacted to the racist slurs.

However, Mido has urged the home support not to lower themselves to the standards of a drunk few at the Riverside.

In an interview with the Daily Mirror, he said, ‘Hopefully we won’t hear the same chants again because it’s silly and should absolutely be kept out of everyday life and that includes football. I hope we don’t hear it again. It’s not only about me, it’s about everyone.’

Asked what his reaction would be if the taunts arose again on Sunday, he replied, ‘If they do start chanting again I’ll make sure I keep my head calm and aim to do well for the team.’

‘I will go to Newcastle and I just plan to play my football and I hope to do well and score goals.’

With Tuncay Sanli expected to be out for three to four weeks with a muscle injury, and doubts about the fitness of new signing Afonso Alves, Mido could be thrown into action in the derby despite his manager’s fears he may not be 100% ready.

Mido didn’t look sharp or fit when he replaced Tuncay on Tuesday against Wigan, but he may be thrown into action as Boro face a striker crisis.

Punish them with a goal like you did the first time. That’s the only way to make them shut up! Than score a second and a third one ’cause I really want to see their stadium empty 😀

That’s true, although some of the chants at the Riverside were disgraceful.

Yeh, i never actually heard them sat in the north-east stand but did see Mido go over to them when he scored. Then i found out about the chants after the game – if it was against a top 4 clubs player or even a London club there would have been outrage

That’s so true! Think I read a little section of it in the morning papers the day after the game but apart from that they never really covered it. That’s rags for you!

Why Mido wasn’t in the squad for the Newcastle game?
