Middlesbrough winger Mustapha Carayol is unlikely to be ready in time for the start of pre-season.

It follows Carayol undergoing knee surgery last month after suffering knee ligament damage against Bournemouth.

“Unfortunately, we don’t expect Muzzy to be ready for when we return to training,” manager Aitor Karanka told SkySports.”He will miss a chunk of that training.

“His mentality is stronger each day,” he continued. “He will have a bit of a break now because he has been working very hard and he needs a change of scene, but after that, he will return here to rehab.”

But in more positive news Australian defender Rhys Williams should be available after an Achilles injury in January ended his World Cup hopes.

“Rhys should be fit for the start of pre-season,” Karanka added. “His recovery is coming along very well and we are happy with where he is in terms of his fitness. He should be able to join up with everyone when we all come back to start the preparations for next season.”
