Middlesbrough boss Tony Mowbray remains confident of adding to his squad ahead of the big-kick off against Leicester City early next month.

But it won’t be Chelsea youngster Thorgan Hazard, who has instead returned to Belgian side Zulte Waregem for a second season-long loan.

Midfielders Dean Whitehead and Joszef Varga have already been recruited while Mowbray is still keen on Napoli’s 23-year Chilean international striker Eduardo Vargas.

“We hope some new signings will come in,” Mowbray told the Northern Echo. “I know the chief executive [Neil Bausor] is working extremely hard behind the scenes to try to finalise some deals for us.

“I’d like to think there will be three or four new signings in before the window shuts,” he added. “But at this moment, we formulate ideas about the way we might set up with the players we’ve got.”
