Gareth Southgate believes we haven’t seen the best from Stewart Downing and if the England strikers weren’t so incompetant, then the criticism aim at the Boro winger would not even have surfaced.
The Boro boss believes Downings performances in an England shirt are not as bad as some would have us believe.
‘I think he’s done well in England matches, if one of the chances he’d created for England had been finished the perception might have been different.’ Said Southgate.
‘He knows how much he’s loved here and how positive I want him to be and I think there’s a lot more to come from him. I’ve played in that position and I can tell you full-backs don’t like wingers who run at them.’
‘He showed the quality of his delivery with the corner and I think he’s also done that with England.’
Sure enough Downing will show the whole world what we already know; Downing is a quality player, and is on course to become one of the best.
