Middlesbrough manager Tony Mowbray has played down talk of a possible return to the Riverside for out-of-favour Liverpool winger Stewart Downing.

The 28-year-old appears surplus to requirements at Anfield after making only a single Premier League start under their new boss Brendan Rodgers. As a result, Boro had been linked with a possible shock move for the ex-Aston Villa wideman in the New Year.

“I have to say it’s just a rumour,” Mowbray told BBC Tees. “It would be wrong for me to talk about a player at another club. If I was Brendan Rodgers I wouldn’t want Tony Mowbray to be talking about one of my players.

“Stewart is a Middlesbrough lad which is why it has created an interest, he started his career here,” he added. “But yet he moved for £20m and the salary and everything that goes with it, it’s not something to discuss at the moment.”

Downing did actually manage a start as Liverpool were held to a 2-2 draw by Young Boys in their latest Europa League tie last night.
