Promotion is everything says striker

Striker Scott McDonald regards promotion for Middlesbrough as far more important than any personal honour of finishing as leading goalscorer.

The Australian international has already rattled in 11 goals in 22 games despite missing the first couple of months of the campaign through injury. He has also been struggling with a back problem since New Year but hopes a recent injection will help resolve the problem and allow him to return against Ipswich Town this weekend.

“I suppose I wouldn’t have thought about being top scorer a few months ago but things can turn around very quickly and soon as I get on the pitch there’s only one thing on my mind – and that’s to score goals,” McDonald told the Northern Echo. “I want to finish top scorer.

“Ultimately, though, even if I wasn’t to finish top scorer I want to get promoted,” he added. “That means everything to me and to the team.”
