When You Believe

Middlesbrough manager Gareth Southgate has uttered a gallantry war-cry to keep the faith ahead of Manchester United’s visit to The Riverside on Sunday afternoon.

Sir Alex Ferguson’s men were illustrious in their 4-0 defeat of Aston Villa on their last league outing, and were dynamic and efficient in their 2-0 win over AS Roma in midweek.

However, Southgate believes anything is possible when you believe.

‘We have to have a mentality that we can go out and win the game,’ he told mfc.co.uk.

‘Nobody will be expecting us to get anything but as we’ve shown at Chelsea and Arsenal, anything is possible.’

‘We have to take what we did in the second half on Sunday into next week.’

Boro were beaten 4-1 in the return fixture at Old Trafford in October, with Tevez, Rooney and Nani getting onto the score-sheet.

And, despite United’s 2-1 victory in this fixture last season, the Boro can still look back fondly on Saturday 29th October 2005, when they humbled United 4-1. Gaizka Mendieta, Jimmy Floyd Hasselbaink and Yakubu (2) were all involved in that famous rout.

It will take a similar effort and performance from the current Boro boys if the side are to take anything from the in-form Reds, however.

Although the visitors are expected to be missing influential centre-back Nemanja Vidic, after the Serb injured his knee in Rome on Tuesday.
