Manager Tony Mowbray believes that new signing Dean Whitehead can be a real asset at Middlesbrough this season.

The 31-year-old midfielder arrives from Stoke City having already won the Championship when skippering Sunderland to the title in 2007.

“He’s won the league before which is invaluable,” Mowbray told BBC Tees. “Dean’s a competitive player and will be good for the dressing room. He brings a wealth of experience.

“He’s the type of footballer who will bring knowledge to the area of the pitch he plays,” he added. “He knows when to sit behind the ball or break beyond it, and he’s tidy in all aspects of the game.”

Whitehead is the second new arrival at the Riverside since the end of last season following Hungarian international Josef Varga also coming in from Debrecen on a season-long loan.
