Middlesbrough are looking at the possibility of signing their former defender David Wheater from Bolton Wanderers.

Boro have already inquired about the Redcar-born 26-year-old centre-back who switched to the Reebok Stadium in a £2.3 deal in January 2011 following more than 150 senior appearances for the Teessiders.

Wheater actually missed most of last season with a cruciate ligament injury, and though he returned towards the end of the campaign, his manager Dougie Freedman is already considering alternatives. West Bromwich Albion defender Craig Dawson is a chief target having spent the second half of last season on loan with them.

And while it is believed that Wanderers are in no rush to sell Wheater, they would risk losing him for nothing next summer should they not move him on soon or negotiate a new deal.
