Middlesbrough centre-back Jonathan Woodgate was being far more guarded with his predictions for the new season.

Back in December the 33-year-old former England defender labelled his Boro side as the best in the division and well on their way to promotion.

But then their form seriously crashed and they actually ended the campaign well down the table and closer to the bottom than the top.

“Last season was so disappointing and I really couldn’t tell you how we fell away so badly,” Woodgate told the Evening Gazette. “I’m not making big statements, because look what happened last time.

“But we have to push on again and aim for the stars,” he continued. “There is no point looking down the league, we’ve got to aim for the top and that’s the way I always think. I think the league is going to be even harder this season.”
