Former boss Aitor Karanka has backed the recent appointment of Garry Monk at Middlesbrough.

The Spaniard previously led the Teessiders back into the Premier League during his three-and-a-half years in charge, only for a slump in performances to witness his departure from the club in March. He’s already been linked with possibly replacing Monk at Elland Road after conceding he wishes to remain in England.

“It’s a good one [appointment] because [Garry] is a young coach who had a good season last year at Leeds,” Karanka reacted in the Evening Gazette. “Nobody expected them to do anything but he was on the verge of guiding them into the play-offs.

“In the view of Boro’s philosophy, and knowing the owner, it’s a good appointment,” he added. “As far as I’m concerned, I hope things go well for [Garry] and that they get promoted next season.”
