Head coach Aitor Karanka is already expecting a positive reaction when facing West Bromwich Albion this weekend.

It follows Middlesbrough’s disappointing exit from the League Cup at Championship side Fulham last night, with the hosts eventually prevailing 2-1 after extra-time at Craven Cottage.

“I said after the game against Sunderland that I was really pleased and confident with the team, and now we have to recover as soon as possible,” Karanka told the Evening Gazette. “It’s not just the legs, it’s our heads too. We have to go to West Brom knowing it’s an important game.

“The past is the past – and we need to try and win the game,” he added. “I hope that this result will have an impact, and on Sunday we will go to the pitch playing in the same way as we did against Stoke and Sunderland.”

Boro are though definitely without new Brazilian defender Fabio (knee) at the weekend, while fellow full-back George Friend (thigh) will need carefully assessing.
