Hungarian midfielder Jozsef Varga won’t be returning to Middlesbrough after talks with the club.
The 25-year-old actually proved a regular at right-back under head coach Aitor Karanka during a successful loan spell from Debrecen last season.
Boro were believed to have an option for his return but Varga claims insufficient finances blocked any hopes of completing a permanent deal.
“I know what the truth is because I was speaking with my agent,” Varga told SkySports. “He had negotiations with Middlesbrough and the reasons of my departure are not connected with my performance.
“It seems their budget doesn’t allow them to buy me permanently,” he continued. “They haven’t been able to win promotion for years so they can’t really afford to buy me.”
