Former Middlesbrough manager Gareth Southgate has rubbished claims that he turned down the opportunity of signing Manchester United winger Nani.

That follows a report that the player’s agent Barry Silkman offered the Portugese winger to Boro for £3.5m four years ago.

It went on to suggest that Southgate rejected his approach on behalf of Nani, who instead joined the Red Devils for £17m the following year.

However, Southgate has since informed the Evening Gazette that there is no truth to the story.
