Australian midfielder Rhys Williams must learn to control his emotions according to Middlesbrough manager Gordon Strachan.

Williams was dismissed in the midweek draw at Derby County after being given two yellow cards by referee David Phillips.

“He got emotional,” Strachan told Boro’s official website. “You can’t be emotional as a player. It’s all right having passion but you have to stay focused and he knows that.

“You have to think what you’re doing before you make the tackle. We know what the consequences are for the team but he got emotional.”

The visitors should already have been well clear by the time that the unfortunate Williams saw red.

“We’re disappointed but Derby showed great spirit and kept making us work,” added Strachan. “The equaliser gave Derby a new sense of hope which they wouldn’t have had if we’d taken our chances.

“We could have been two or three up at that point, it was unbelievable to go 2-1 down but after all that happened we have to be happy with a point.”
